I just bought myself a CYMA M14. Its completely stock and entirely obnoxious. What would be the cheapest way to make my gearbox quieter? I've heard using foam or cotton balls in the hollow areas works. Any good ideas other than that?

Well... the easy ways to quiet a gearbox down are to add sound dampening material around the gearbox (not much room in an M14, sorry), reshim it so the gears dont make as much noise, fine tune the motor height (dont by shimming) and making sure that the gears are properly greased.  Other than that, use a higher voltage battery to reduce the amount of noise between trigger being pulled and shot being fired.

ugh, I'm kind of worried about taking my gun apart before I really NEED to. I don't really know how to shim gears. Would it require buying new shims, or can it be done with the included ones?

Honestly? I wouldn't open it if there isn't anything wrong with it... hard lesson to be learned by experience.
