I have a question. Just finished putting a camo paint job on my gun. I personally think it's pretty good. What's the scoop on ultra flat clear coats? Do they work to protect the paint job? How many coats would be required? What is a good brand and where can I find it/price. I looked at home depot (haha) but they didn't have nething...didn't really expect much. I'll have pics up of it eventually, kind of wanted to see about clear coats first.

My first gun camouflage attempt: I was going for an all earth tone camouflage pattern. I used four different shades of brown. The darkest shade almost looks black in the photo and the dark earth had a little more orange in it than I was planning. The orange kinda gives the camouflage an autumn colors feel to it. Overall I am very pleased.

Not my cup of tea for a paint job, I would have put more green in it to make it more year round, and I would not have used hard edges like the edges of the leaves but cool. The thing with the hard edges is that it will make it stick out (as will any black) a little bit more because there are no real hard edges in nature. It's part of the reason that Digitalized patterns are so small in the edges.

Funky paint scheme bot not terrible.
sort of like canadian flag meets auspat.
You don't need to clear coat it just paint over it when it starts getting worn.
Besides in my opinion, battle worn guns look more authentic anyway.

reminds me of a kinda grey aussi camo job. i think it would be perfect for fall games, which is right around the corner.
also i know im on the only one thats painted guns but sometimes slightly off/odd coloring schemes works better than what you would think.

Looks good! As for being limited to a season, I think if a plain black gun is good for year round, then this will do more than okay...
Very clean patterns!

I am coming back to this thread because I am painting my M4 soon. I wanted to know more about clear coat. I know it isn't necessary but does it preserve the paint as well as it should? I know some people like the beat up look but I like the clean brand new look and want to try and keep it in that condition. I don't see much about clear coat on youtube or in step by step directions so it must not be popular but why? Sounds beneficial to me. I used to use clear coat all the time in my industrial tech class and that was for an electric powered car. It seemed to work fine until one guy drove it straight into the closed garage door. That messed up our hard work pretty good. Man we were pissed lol... But I don't plan on beating up my gun that bad. I just want the paint to stay for as long as possible. Any thoughts?

Unless there is such a thing as matte clearcoat, I'd avoid it. Unless you really like a shiny gun. Half the fun of painting the gun is knowing you get to do it over again in 6 months. Just buy the cans they will last you forever if all you paint is a gun. My original Krylon Ultraflat camos are still going strong after about 20 repaints plus I used the black to paint a motorcycle part. Plenty left.
I guess the only thing I could say is that if you want it to last longer put on more coats.
Good luck post pics!

Wow Acid that's pretty sweet. How long did it take for you to do that? And how exactly did you do that tape or stencils?
