Safe for gearboxes, safe depends on the set up... entirely... Like cars, getting 500 RWHP on the stock bottom end of a vehicle is a gamble, but it can be done if done safely. For the majority of quality guns, this wont cause issues. At the same time, I wouldnt go around hosing people either. The things that will be affected by this the most will be the gearbox shell, any M16 series will be prone to gearbox failures at colder temperatures at the assumed "400 FPS" US limit. But there is no scientific way to say when the point of "failure" is going to occur. There are people in colder countries and states that have played below zero at our FPS limits and had ZERO gearbox failures, but Mryle broke the ICS Upper gearbox in his ICS M4 in slightly colder temperatures. The ICS upper is pretty damn strong too...
Having said that, avoid full auto hosing, quick bursts, and you should be fine. Besides, no one actually knows what the weather will be like that day, for all we know it could be 115 that day...

yeah my upper shattered like a glass hit with a hammer, but it could have also been a flaw in the metal compound (weak spot in the metal)
and if its 115 this weekend i am not playing airsoft due to it might be the last days on earth and i am going to figure out a way to survive as long and painless as i can

Ummm... I'm sure "she" will be okay... I did check the almanac for the last ten years or so and Nebraska's inconsistant weather patterns show an average of 35* F with only two of those years being any different. Back in 2002 we hit 22* F and in 2006 the high was 55* F. So it may be a nice weekend, or it could be insanely cold![color=][/color]

I got a new gun for the event. I bought a jg Sig 552 navy seals gun. It has a folding stock and can shoot up to 190 distance.

would covering the gun in rap of some sort be a good idea for the colder weather days or will it make much difference or is it like a car that just needs to be warmed up slowly by use and then kept warm?

Those that are really worried about the temperature next week, go to iTunes and listen to the new Airsoftology podcast. Or you can stream from their website www.airsoftology.com towards the end of the episode for the tech tip they go over some cold weather suggestions. From clothing to battery and mechbox care. If the temp stays above freezing there shouldn't be many problems, but once that line is crossed it seems like AEG's are much more susceptible to breakage. |
